Vincent Van Gogh painted "Irises" in 1889, the year before his death. He was staying at the asylum at Saint Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France and painted "Irises" before his first attack at the asylum.
Although Van Gogh sold only one painting in his life, the aftermath of his work is enormous.
